40 missing cases at begining of file???

Eric Langston

There have been several times that I after working on a file, I find 40 missing cases!  Forty rows with system-missing values / null-strings for all variables.  It’s always exactly 40 and I think they show up at the end of my file.  I usually find it because I try to merge files (via match files) and then after I re-sort the variables, I find 40 missing cases float to the top.

I checked the overall number of cases and it appears that SPSS isn’t deleting any data, but rather appending 40 rows of nothing to the end of the file.

Is anyone else having this problem?

I’m using SPSS v17.0.2 on Windows XP SP3 with all updates.

Thanks

How did you create the system file? I make the guess that you imported de cases from excel or another externel program and that there are empty lines in the spreadsheet. That also happened to me (but I never got exactly 40 empty lines). Could that be the case?

Have you checked your source database?  I have experienced this issue before, and it turned out that our database programmers had some method of adding rows to the database which actually assigned record ids before actually populating them.  Then since these rows appear as legitimate records, SPSS pulled them in.

This may or may not be your problem , but it’s worth a look-see.

Re: 40 missing cases at begining of file???

DataMaestro
Eric/Mike,

That problem sounded familiar but I thought I was just imagining it, kinda sounded like I had that scenario last week.

Well, just now, on a different data file the "mysterious 40" appeared again - same behavior that Eric reported - same PASW version and OS.

Here is all I did - ran a selection of syntax that just added value labels, scrolling through the data view also.  As I was scrolling "?" appeared in cells - I usually avoid this by Caching Now, but this time I didn't.  It took a minute but the buffers caught up with my scrolling and actual data or blanks replaced the "?"   Then I saved the file.

If I had to guess, the "mysterious 40" is some sort of caching that doesn't know how to clear itself as you save/close the file.

Eric, should we report this as a bug?  Were you scrolling through the data view?

Regards,
George

Roberts, Michael

George,

The “blank” cases you report – are they exactly 40?  Seems like if you are experiencing the same thing as Eric, then it is some kind of limitation.  Would be interesting to hear from Eric!

In reply to this post by Roberts, Michael

First, thank you to David Nichols for opening an SPSS tech support case for me.  If any of the rest of you are curious, I have isolated the problem and have been able to replicate it on my machine.  I am only able to replicate it using the GUI and only using the exact GUI commands below.  If I issue the same commands using syntax, the problem does not occur.

Here are the steps:

1. Open SPSS.

2. (In Data View) Type a number into the upper left field. This should create a new numeric variable ("VAR00001").

NOTE: It must be a number.  The problem does not occur with string variables.

3. Right click on the "VAR00001" header and select "Sort Ascending".

NOTE: The problem will not occur if you sort the cases using the "Data -> Sort Cases" dialog box.

4. Create a new data file using the keyboard shortcut "Ctl + N".

NOTE: The problem will not occur if you sort the cases using the "File -> New -> Data" menu selection.

5. The original file will now have 40 blank cases appended to the end of the file.

I did get it.  The 40 cases appear as just a sys missing (dot) under VAR0001 - it's not easy to see.

Well, I just followed Eric's instructions and the 'event' did not happen. The original file still has only the single number in cell 1 and the other file is blank

Subject: 40 missing cases at begining of file???

Thanks

Eric,

This issue must be specific to the 2nd patch for v.17.   My version is patched to v17.0.1 and I did not get the error.  Tried several times, I think it is probably part of the 2nd patch(?)  Any thoughts?  Do you still have a machine with the first patch only?

Thanks to Eric for the replication scenario and to others for their information. I was able to replicate this on Release 17.0.2. I don't find it happening on Release 18, but we'll file a bug report to try to make sure that whatever was causing the problem won't crop up again later.
