There have been several times that I after working on a
file, I find 40 missing cases! Forty rows with system-missing values /
null-strings for all variables. It’s always exactly 40 and I think
they show up at the end of my file. I usually find it because I try to
merge files (via match files) and then after I re-sort the variables, I find 40
missing cases float to the top. I checked the overall number of cases and it appears that
SPSS isn’t deleting any data, but rather appending 40 rows of nothing to
the end of the file. Is anyone else having this problem? I’m using SPSS v17.0.2 on Windows XP SP3 with all
updates. Thanks --- Eric Langston Research Analyst Human Capital Research Corporation 500 Davis Street, Suite 1002 Evanston, IL 60201 (847) 475-7580 Phone (847) 475-7584 Fax |

How did you create the system file? I make the guess that you imported de cases from excel or another externel program and that there are empty lines in the spreadsheet. That also happened to me (but I never got exactly 40 empty lines). Could that be the case?

Have you checked your source database? I have experienced this issue before,
and it turned out that our database programmers had some method of adding rows
to the database which actually assigned record ids before actually populating
them. Then since these rows appear
as legitimate records, SPSS pulled them in. This may or may not be your problem , but it’s worth a
look-see. HTH Mike From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On

George, The “blank”
cases you report – are they exactly 40? Seems
like if you are experiencing the same thing as Eric, then it is some kind of
limitation. Would be interesting to hear
from Eric! Mike From: George Musick [mailto:[hidden email]]

Hi
Eric,
Can you
provide us with a precise replication scenario?

First, thank you to David
Nichols for opening an SPSS tech support case for me. If any of the rest
of you are curious, I have isolated the problem and have been able to replicate
it on my machine. I am only able to replicate it using the GUI and only
using the exact GUI commands below. If I issue the same commands using
syntax, the problem does not occur. Here are the steps: 1. Open SPSS. 2. (In Data View) Type a number
into the upper left field. This should create a new numeric variable
("VAR00001"). NOTE: It must be a
number. The problem does not occur with string variables. 3. Right click on the
"VAR00001" header and select "Sort Ascending". NOTE: The problem will not occur
if you sort the cases using the "Data -> Sort Cases" dialog box. 4. Create a new data file using
the keyboard shortcut "Ctl + N". NOTE: The problem will not occur
if you sort the cases using the "File -> New -> Data" menu
selection. 5. The original file will now
have 40 blank cases appended to the end of the file. From: Roberts, Michael

Well, I just followed Eric's instructions and the 'event' did
not happen. The original file still has only the single number in cell 1
and the other file is blank

Eric, This issue must be specific to the 2nd patch for
v.17. My version is patched to v17.0.1 and I did
not get the error. Tried several times,
I think it is probably part of the 2nd patch(?) Any thoughts? Do you still have a machine with the
first patch only? Mike From: Eric Langston [mailto:[hidden email]] First,

Thanks to
Eric for the replication scenario and to others for their information. I was
able to replicate this on Release 17.0.2. I don't find it happening on Release
18, but we'll file a bug report to try to make sure that whatever was causing
the problem won't crop up again later.
