400 pages of SPSS tutorials for beginners (and Season's Greetings)

John F Hall
To celebrate reaching 400 pages of SPSS tutorials today (for Survey Analysis
Workshop) also my 70th birthday on the 7th Dec and my daughter's 48th the
same day, I've created a complete guide to all the  tutorials on my site.

http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/uploads/2/9/9/8/2998485/detailed_guide_to_spss_tutorials.rtfThey're mainly syntax-based and intended for use by students, newbies, tutors and support staff with the processing and analysis of data fromquestionnaire surveys.  They constitute a more or less complete andincremental course starting from absolute scratch and working up from asimple pen and paper exercise to working with data from major nationalsurveys: there isn't a single equation (yet!)I'll be away from home (and thankfully my computer) from the 6th until the17th, but I don't expect to do any more serious work on the site until wellinto 2011.Oh, as well as SPSS, there's some serious (not easily available, if at all)survey research material.Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.John Hall (Old Dog, Old Tricks)[hidden email]://surveyresearch.weebly.com

Hong,

The URL in the e-mail runs into the next word, so you have to delete that portion (it's the word "they're").

I tried the link and it works.

John,
You should consider .PDF files rather than .DOC files.  I for one am rather leery of opening .DOC files which may contain embedded macros.  Also, probably everyone has acrobat reader installed. Not everyone has M$ Word or the free alternative Open Office installed.

2 ways to get file into PDF are 1) read in WordPerfect and export to pdf.  2) get a "printer" like CutePdf and install it in your list of printers.  Then in any programs you have you can "print" to a pdf file.

Well, if you have a professional version of Acrobat you will have an icon on the RHS corner of you Microsoft word. A simple clicking will let you convert your document. You could also get a shareware PDF converter to do it if you do not have the professional version.

However, I have been using CutePdf for years.  I have not used it for forms that can be filled in online. I have used it to print all kinds of files that can be printed on an ordinary printer.

Open Office is a great way to create a PDF.  You can read your DOC file in directly and just Export as PDF.
Please reply to the list and not to my personal email.

CutePdf is a good freeware pdf writer and Foxit Reader is a good freeware pdf reader. They're a lot lighter than memory-hungry than Adobe.
Besides, David, pdf files may also contain all kinds of scripts (Java scripts, etc.), esp. the fancy ones which are supported by Adobe Acrobat. So in that respect both .doc and .pdf are potential security hazards.

Cheers!!

Hi John

I disgree with those who are anti the MS Word file format.

MS Word does not necessarily convert well into PDF. The .doc file format is better.

There is an MS Word file viewer: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/view-or-print-word-documents-without-word-HA001149695.aspx

Warm regards/gary

For a number of years now, PDF drivers have been built into the OS for mac, so any app that prints can create PDFs.

factor analysis for count data

E. Bernardo
Dear everyone,

Results from a survey question "How often do you purchase the following 30 products/services online? The products for example are books, laptop, airline tickets...THus, I have gathered 30 count variables.  I want to identify the number of small factors that explain most of the variance of the 30 variables.  (1) What factor extraction method and rotation method are appropriate for the data?  (2) Also, comments on sample size consideration are appreciated.

Thank you.
Eins

On second look I see that the link is is
http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/uploads/2/9/9/8/2998485/detailed_guide_to_spss_tutorials.rtf
If I recall correctly, the US Navy designed .rtf - rich text formatting-
to be independent of brand of word processing software.
Also they wanted do get around embedded macros etc.

I just opened it in WordPerfect.   Which program is set to open a file
with a particular extension/type depends on settings in the user's system.
I believe that these days even MS products ask whether one wants to
enable macros when opening a file.

Also the file is marked read only.

Re: 400 pages of SPSS tutorials for beginners (and Season's Greetings)

John F Hall
In reply to this post by Gary Oliver-3
After 12 days away using other people's computers and the awful orange.fr
interface, I'm now back home.  I sent something out from orange.fr but it
appears not to be saved and in any case there's no facility for forwarding
it to myself.  What is it with these software engineers?

Thanks to all those who sent birthday greetings.

At the risk of repeating myself, I said I'm sticking to MS Word as there is
still a lot of material to convert and update from WordStar4 and SPSS for a
Vax cluster to Word and SPSS for Windows.  I've tried various pdf formats
and software, but none are satisfactory (and I can't face getting my head
round Serif PagePlus just yet).  Having reached my allocation of three-score
years and ten, the main objective is to get all the tutorials up and running
in Word before I pop my clogs.

The summary guide to the SPSS tutorials is on:
http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/summary-guide-to-spss-tutorials.html

The detailed guide to all SPSS tutorials is on:
http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/uploads/2/9/9/8/2998485/detailed_guide_to_spss_tutorials.rtf
(for some reason it won't display if uploaded as a *.doc file, but I'll play
with it and see if I can change it)

Both guides contain links to other pages and documents on my site or to
other useful sites and downloadable materials.

Seasons greetings to one and all.

PS  Does anyone know who decided that Times New Roman should be the default
font for plain text, or why?  It lends spurious legitimacy to everything
written in it: Arial, Verdani and others are so much easier to read.
