I wonder why a graph object (such as created via GPL syntax or a
legacy command) does not remember the syntax it was built by, a
would-be obviously useful feature.
Consider I open an Output doc with a graph previously created and want now to draw exactly the same graph, only with new data, currently open. The new data contains all the necessary variables and with the same properties as the old data was. Then, having opened the graph and pressing the special button "Paste graph's syntax" I could rerun it with the new data. Or even without any pasting: a button called "Update graph with new data", to call the processor to try to rerun the graph-embedded syntax with the new data. ===================== To manage your subscription to SPSSX-L, send a message to [hidden email] (not to SPSSX-L), with no body text except the command. P.S. Relying on syntax written in Notes object is not a way out.
Many output files may have Notes been erased for some reason. In
addition, opening-copying-pasting-editing the contents of a Note
takes time, it's not convenient.

I believe Leland Wilkinson in the Grammar of Graphics discusses this IIRC. The graph has an underlying xml structure. The same structure can be made by different GPL calls, so there is no unique set of GPL code for any one graph. (I think)

Thanks, Andy, for reply.
Just to repeat what I meant (if I wasn't clear). Currently, to build the same (and potentially edited) graph on another dataset you have to 1) Take the GPL command/code from the Notes or saved syntax file (if you have them!). Run. Open the graph and apply the saved Template file (if have it and can identify the proper one among the mess of such ones). See, how many waste clicks/pastes/searches you have to do. It may really exhaust and irritate sometimes. Why not have just a button in the Graph "update data" upon pressing which SPSS will itself run the syntax (stored with the graph) and template-edit it (also stored with the graph). Whilst these few seconds you can relax yourself. ===================== To manage your subscription to SPSSX-L, send a message to [hidden email] (not to SPSSX-L), with no body text except the command. I seem to recall a macro or programmability extension/dialog or such that would get all the syntax from the Notes object and copy it to a syntax file. I don’t
remember the name. Anyone…? Melissa From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]]
