A short Question

I would appreciate help concerning the following issues:
 
 
I studied statistics as a graduate student at  two universities.  And as a statistics graduate student, I have used the statistical software package, SAS.
 
I now find myself working for a company which only uses SPSS v. 14 (Base only).  
 
 
I've several questions:
 
1)  Is SPSS Base quite limited relative to SPSS with all of the add-ons
 
2) could someone please suggest a text or texts  by any publisher which documents the syntax used by SPSS.
I tend to find the point/click methods used by SPSS as quite limiting * I am not concerned about writing the syntax to perform statistical methods.
 
3) Third,  if anyone is familiar with the SAS statistical program JMP v. 6,  how would you compare its data management capabilities and its capacity to perform various statistical methods relative to SPSS-BASE.  For SPSS files can be saved as JMP files; this would allow me to perform my analyses using either JMP v. 6 or SPSS Base v. 14
 
4) Finally a controversial question for those who use both SAS and SPSS currently, which of these two programs offers better data management capabilities and statistical capabilities.

Hi Joe,

I am not very knowledgeable about SAS or JMP, so I defer to the list
for some of your questions.

As for the first book to explore, definitely Ray Leveque's fine book
in the third edition.  I am sure most on the list would agree.
http://www.spsstools.net  It can be found there as a free download, or
can be purchased on SPSS.com.  Amazon does not have the current
edition.

If you concern is data management and not stats, you should be fine
with base as most (all?) of the modules add stats features, not data
management features.  One could debate whether the new data validation
module is an exception.

Note that the complete SPSS Command Syntax Reference manual is installed with the system in PDF format and can be accessed from the Help menu -2079 pages in SPSS 14.
