AIM command & printing results NOT plotting

Mark Webb-3
The AIM command plots the results.

If the variable labels are long (e.g. a factor description) the graphs
aren't great.

Is there a way to print the results to the output window rather than plot
them ?

Regards

Mark

ERROR: prn.* not allowed?

Albert-Jan Roskam
Hi list,

I was trying to save a file as prn.* (so prn.sav,
prn.dat, or whatever), but every time I did that I got
a file of the right size, but which was empty when I
inspected it. It also couldn't be copied, moved, etc.
It has nothing to do with file rights or anything like
that, nope, it's simply the file name itself that's
not allowed! Maybe it is related to .prn files or
something like that See the syntax below (tested on
v14.01). Often I didn't get any error. WEIRD isn't it?

Are there anymore cases like this? It'd save me a lot
of time in the future.

Cheers!
Albert-Jan

get file = 'c:\program files\spss\employee data.sav'.
save outfile = 'd:\temp\prn.sav' .

>Error # 61 in column 16.  Text: d:\temp\prn.sav
>The filename is not valid.
>This command not executed.

get file = 'c:\program files\spss\employee data.sav'.
save outfile = 'd:\temp\prn_.sav' . /* with
underscore.
* no error! *.

Re: ERROR: prn.* not allowed?

vlad simion
Hi Albert-Jan,

in Spss 15, when you try to save with that name, does not get any error, but
it gives a warning like this:

"prn
This file name is a reserved device name. Please choose another name."

Though, I think it recognize the extension of the *.prn files and maybe Spss
does not want to mess with them :)

Vlad

New Extension Module on SPSS Developer Central

Peck, Jon
In reply to this post by Albert-Jan Roskam
I have uploaded a new Extension command to SPSS Developer Central (www.spss.com/devcentral).

Extension commands require SPSS 16 or, better, SPSS 16.0.1, the appropriate plugin, and Python or R.

This module, named propor, provides the PROPOR command, which displays binomial and Poisson confidence intervals for proportions and, if multiple proportions are specified, it displays confidence intervals for the differences.

Extension commands, new in SPSS 16, allow authors to define their own SPSS-style syntax and implement commands in Python or R with output going to the Viewer.

For example, after installing this module, you can run

PROPOR NUM=x DENOM=y /LEVEL ALPHA=.1.

just as if this were a built-in command.  Extension commands are loaded automatically when SPSS starts.

This module is new; comments appreciated.

Regards,
Jon Peck

R: ERROR: prn.* not allowed?

Luca Meyer-3
In reply to this post by Albert-Jan Roskam
It gives me the same error even with SPSS 16, and when I try to save an
Excel file with the name prn.xls I get an error message "prn is a reserved
name". So it isn't a SPSS matter but rather it looks like a Windows issue...

Boer, CPJ de

It's even worse, It is not something of Windows, but of DOS..
DOS hed reserved names for devices, in fact for the ports on which one connects a device.
DOS saw and Windows still  sees the following  as reserved names, file names or directory names with those reserved words in front of the extension, are not te be used.
   CON     Keyboard and display
PRN     System list device, usually a parallel port
AUX     Auxiliary device, usually a serial port
   CLOCK$  System real-time clock
   NUL     Bit-bucket device
   A:-Z:   Drive letters
   COM1    First serial communications port
   LPT1    First parallel printer port
   LPT2    Second parallel printer port
   LPT3    Third parallel printer port
   COM2    Second serial communications port
   COM3    Third serial communications port
   COM4    Fourth serial communications port

One could call this legacy; junk you drag along with you into every subsequent version of Windows...
