AMOS error message (cannot run the data)

Chloe-3
Hello All,

As a beginner of AMOS and dummy in computer language, I appreciate if anyone
can solve my problem.

I tried to enter/specify a full SEM model into AMOS. But when I want to
"calculate estimates", following error messages appear (different windows).
1. An error occurred while attempting to write data for the group, Group
number 1, to the file, C:\USERS.......................\YYYYDA.tmp.
2. an error occurred while attempting to fit the model.
An error occurred while attempting to write a temporary data file.

I have no idea how to solve the above problem...I feel it is not the problem
of model specification or the software (I can run those examples).

Really appreciate if someone can help.

Regards,
Chloe

I would try the easiest step first - make sure that you have no missing  data
in your dataset.  AMOS is not so flexible on this, and the error  messages
are not always as precise as they could be.  So, before you start  AMOS, run a
COUNT of the number of missing values for all the variables you will  include
in the model from your SPSS syntax window.  Create a subset of the  cases with
all non-missing values, and run AMOS from the newly created dataset  without
missingness.

I agree with Charla's advise. For instance,
bootstrapping is not possible if the data contain
missing values, because you could create a bootstrap
sample comprised of mostly/only missing values. In the
case of bootstrapping, I recall that AMOS gave a clear
message. But perhaps for other procedures the messages
are a bit more cryptic. If the missing values are
missing completely at random (MCAR), it shouldn't make
a difference (ie. the results may be generalized to
the entire dataset). But I have no idea whether a good
test exists to ascertain missingness is MCAR or not.

Cheers!!

The message provided by the last few versions of AMOS were very clear on
the subject.  You will get a pop-up window that aborts the run and the
message within says you can't select bootstap (and a few other functions)
with missing data.  If you have made this mistake, you'll know it.

Dear all,

I have actually the same problem. But I do NOT have missings in my data, I do NOT use any bootstrap - just very simple straight-forward CFA. The funny thing, that last week the models ran well, but now they don't anymore. I also deleted all unnecessary temp-files in order to have enough disk space. Nothing helps. I anyone knows the solution: please help!

Thanks, SowiLady

Dear all,

I am experiencing the same problems with AMOS and was wondering if any of you had successfully resolved the issue.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Re: AMOS error message (cannot run the data)

SowiLady
Hi Torsten,

yes, acutally the solution is very simple and straightforward - but I don't know if you will like it: Amos 16 cannot digest data created by SPSS versions older than 16.

It's a licence problem. For Amos 16 you need SPSS 16, and licences from older versions of Amos have already expired. So you HAVE to get SPSS 16 to work with Amos. That was also confirmed by the SPSS user service, by the way.

As soon as you open your data in SPSS 16 and save them, Amos processes them perfectly.

Have fun!

So, how can I solve the problem?

Re: AMOS error message (cannot run the data)

Ryan
For some reason, this is the first post of a chain of posts from this thread that I have received. Had I obtained the initial post I would have requested that the OP provide a covariance matrix in SPSS syntax form the can be read by AMOS, AND to provide the AMOS syntax. So far, I haven't seen anything about the model(s) being specified. The syntax would shine a bright light on the actual model the user is trying to fit.

I don't believe missing data has anything to do with what I have read so far.

AMOS Graphics is a blessing and a curse in that allows one to create a schematic representation of a model, link the "picture" to a data file, and then click a button to estimate the parameters. This can easily result in mis-specifications of the model, sometimes caught by AMOS, sometimes not.

In terms of version incompatibility issues, it is also possible for AMOS to read EXCEL files. That is another option. I actually think AMOS can read .txt files as well.

I am not actually sure how I can write a syntax in SPSS for Amos...
I have never used Amos, so everything is new to me (-:

Re: AMOS error message (cannot run the data)

Ryan
The following syntax will create a dataset that can be read by AMOS:

MATRIX DATA VARIABLES = ROWTYPE_ x1 x2 x3 x4.
BEGIN DATA
N 500 500 500 500
COV 1.054
COV .734 1.010
COV .962 .479 1.74
COV .473 .354 .878 2.15
END DATA.
You could also include the means in the code above if intercepts are parameters to be estimated in your model.

Next, you should provide the AMOS syntax.

I cannot promise that I will have time to help you, but the general point I am trying to make is that it is much easier for people to help you if you provide: (a) the covariance or correlation matrix in a form that can be read by AMOS, (b) a description of the SEM model, (c) the AMOS syntax, and (d) the error message(s) you are receiving. With and (a) and (c), someone could fit the model in the matter of a minute or two.

Is it always necessary to provide this level of detail to receive the solution to your problem? Of course not it is not, but it does make it a lot easier.

Needless to say, there are times when providing a covariance matrix may not help (e.g., bootstrap methodology issues in AMOS). Of course, one could then post SPSS simulation code that generates data that very closely resemble the actual data, but at that point, it might just be easier to explain the problem in words and/or perhaps meet with someone in person.

I have the same issue while performing a CFA while there are no missing
data. I receive errors while using SPSS and Excel files. I do have AMOS 26
and SPSS 25. Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?

thanks
