ANNOUNCE: CALL FOR SPSS AND R TRAINERS AND TUTORIAL/POSTER GIVERS

Peter Watson-7

2012 SPSS AND R TRAINING DAY ANNOUNCEMENT & CALL FOR TUTORIAL/COURSE/POSTER GIVERS

ASSESS, the group of R and SPSS users, will be holding a day of courses which will take place on

Friday 2nd November 2012 in the Alcuin Research Resource Centre, University of York. We have been running

training events for over 25 years focusing on teaching how to get the most out of SPSS and, more recently, also the R freeware.

The day will consist of parallel course sessions (both morning and afternoon) teaching aspects of using R, for beginners, and SPSS.

The committee welcomes contributions on SPSS and R-related topics from all academic and professional fields.

We are particularly interested in people who might be interested in giving tutorials either in a PC lab or a lecture theatre

aimed at teaching people basic aspects of statistical methods and use of R and SPSS.

The courses may cover areas such as 'Health Applications', data management of messy data, basic SPSS or R syntax, an introduction to generalised linear models including regression, correlation, analysis of (co)variance and logistic regression. Other areas of interest include practical SPSS or R syntax tips, producing charts and other multivariate techniques including factor analysis.

We would also be interested in anyone who might like to give a poster.

If there is sufficient interest there will be a prize for the best poster.  We are also particularly keen to hear from STUDENTS who

are SPSS or R users who might be interested in contributing in any way.

Presentations from previous meetings are on our website at http://www.spssusers.co.uk/.

The courses will consist of two formats: longer half-day PC lab sessions of between 2 and 3 hours and a series of 30 minute tutorials (including some time for questions) making up teaching sessions in the auditorium. Speakers and poster givers do not pay the conference fee and speakers may also claim expenses and are taken to a leading restaurant in York for a complimentary dinner on the Thursday evening. York is a vibrant and historic city and has plenty of events throughout the year which cater for tourists.

If you would like to give a workshop/tutorial/poster (or even if you think you might but are not yet sure or would like to know more), please contact the meeting organiser, Peter Watson (see below).  A printable form is provided below for your convenience.

The Alcuin Research Resource Centre (ARRC) is at the University campus located in Heslington,

2 miles to the south-east of the city centre. It takes 10-15 minutes in a taxi from the

railway station. Buses also go to the University

(See http://www.york.ac.uk/admin/security/transport/bus.html).

University Parking and location details are at http://www.york.ac.uk/np/maps/.

Accommodation is bookable via tourist information on (01904) 550099 or (01904) 554455.

The meeting is open to all current users of SPSS and anyone interested in SPSS.

Come along to

* obtain training in using SPSS and R from experienced tutors who are fellow users

* learn about statistical methods underlying procedures in R and SPSS

* see users construct and run syntax programs to address issues of general applicability

* hear about procedures and modules that users have found helpful

* exchange ideas with other SPSS users

* suggest ideas for future training.

Registration forms for the meeting will be available later.
