ASSESS is an independent user led group for IBM SPSS Statistics,

a computer package for analysing and presenting data. Recent ASSESS workshop

topics include IBM SPSS Statistics syntax,

Logistic regression and Hospital Episode Statistics.

Two one-day workshops together with a day of IBM SPSS Statistics User presentations are provisionally planned to be held

at the Alcuin Research Resource Centre, University of York, on Friday 10th November 2017.

The workshops will be taught in an interactive hands-on workshop-style format,

with frequent examples. All example files and notes will be given to all workshop attenders

(on USB sticks). There will also be printed handouts at the user talk sessions but not

for the workshops. In addition there will be a plenary 30 minute recorded webinar open to

all delegates given by a member of IBM SPSS Statistics which will take place immediately

after lunch prior to the afternoon parallel sessions.

Keith Bentley is a lecturer at the University of Salford and former senior police officer.

He will lead ‘An introduction to IBM SPSS for complete beginners’. This course is aimed at

complete beginners to IBM SPSS Statistics. It introduces basic concepts and structures and uses

these to read in and prepare data ready for analysis and perform data manipulations using core commands.

Paul Norman, a lecturer in Human Geography Applied Spatial Analysis & Policy from the University of Leeds will lead ‘Determining area types: by classification using k-means cluster analysis and by developing a deprivation index using SPSS’.

The booking fee includes a coffee break mid-workshop but not overnight accommodation.

A buffet lunch is available and is included for those attending both a morning and

an afternoon event. Further details will be sent to delegates upon receipt of booking forms.

Come along to:

* obtain training in using IBM SPSS Statistics from experienced tutors who are fellow users

* learn about statistical methods used for data analysis in IBM SPSS Statistics

* exchange ideas with other IBM SPSS Statistics users

* plan for an even better user group and suggest events for 2018

The venue for both the workshops and user (presentations) meeting is the Alcuin Research Resource

Centre (ARRC) on York University campus located in Heslington, 2 miles to the south-east

of the city centre. It takes 10-15 minutes in a taxi from the railway station.

The Number 4 bus runs regularly to the University from York railway station (see

http://www.yorkshiretravel.net/). Parking at the University is very difficult.

Location details are at http://www.york.ac.uk/about/maps/. Accommodation is

bookable via tourist information on (01904) 621756 or (01904) 554455.
