ASSESS 2014 (SPSS users in Europe) annual colloquium

John F Hall

I’ve uploaded some pdf files outlining my sessions at York to my page:

Teaching with survey data

There are also two new pages on the site:

The Beginners’ [Clods’ ] Guide to Survey Analysis Using SPSS

(website page: http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/the-beginnersrsquo-clodsrsquo--guide-to-survey-analysis-using-spss.html )

Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind: working with alien SPSS files

The documents below outline the contents of the sessions and have hyperlinks (tested and working) to all other appropriate resources:

The Beginners’ [Clods’ ] Guide to Survey Analysis Using SPSS

Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind: working with alien SPSS files

http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/uploads/2/9/9/8/2998485/close_encounters_of_the_fourth_kind.pdf

is an introduction to, and critical commentary on, SPSS files from major surveys distributed by the UK Data Service and others, with particular emphasis on their suitability and ease of use for teaching and secondary research.

Clods’ Guide went well, but there was no time to cover everything I had prepared as we finished up doing SPSS live and skipped huge chunks of the slide shows.  Despite several offers to take a tea/coffee break, the class wanted to carry on.  As well as some basic SPSS, I think they learned a lot from my running commentary (unfortunately not recorded) on output and on warning/error messages.  I think it was a useful learning experience watching an experienced "Old Dog" like me running SPSS syntax "on the fly", warts, and typos and all.  As it happens the stacked chart from your link is very apposite, as it one of my examples was differences between men and women in earnings from paid work.  I have exercises on my site for the 1989 British Social Attitudes survey and will be replicating them on later waves up to 2011.  On Tue 4th Nov it was Women’s Equality Day (no men in the class) and this provided an occasion for my supplementary notes to attendees.

Close Encounters got a few appreciative chuckles and feverish note-taking.  Again, by skipping chunks of slide-shows, even with SPSS running live, I managed to keep to my allocated 30 minutes, finishing off with a live run of Jon Peck's brilliant Python code (for the *.sav file for the 2011 British Social Attitudes survey) to pull question numbers to the front of the variable labels, make all labels start with an upper case letter and preserve acronyms and words needing to retain upper case first letters (eg Christian, BBC: but these have to be specified by the user following JKP’s instructions).

Both sessions stressed the use of Data >> Define Variable Properties (DVP) not to build up files or edit attributes, but to check their contents, especially as it includes counts and is a lot easier than checking dozens of frequency tables.

The slide-shows will be uploaded once they’ve had a final check, but I’m happy to send zip files (Close Encounters 9.9 mb: Clods’ Guide 7.3 mb) to anyone interested.
