Advice on solution to problem with failure to generate p-values for Exact tests

margmacd

Hello

I have been encountering problems with SPSS provision for my students at my institution and struggling to get the help I need to resolve this urgent issue. I would be most grateful for advice.

The issue relates to obtaining p-values when Exact tests are run using SPSS version 24.0.0.2 on a Mac laptop using the institution-wide license for students, although I am not experiencing the same problem on my desktop PC, which also uses this version, provided by my institution.  The issue can be illustrated with reference to Fisher’s Exact test.  Instead of obtaining the required p-value, the user receives a table with the caption  ‘Cannot be computed because unable to open temporary file.’ I was advised a year ago that the problem had been resolved, as a patch was included in version 24.0.0.2. However, clearly, the problem has recurred.  I would appreciate advice that I can pass on to my students to fix the problem, as many of them will have already installed the software onto their Mac laptops. Please kindly email me directly rather than the list, as this will allow me to explain the situation more fully and provide images of relevant output if needed.

Thanks in advance

Best wishes
Margaret

Others may be encountering the same problem.  So if anyone does have a
solution, please share it with the list even if you do send it to Margaret
via e-mail.

P.S.
I would be most happy to send a tried and tested solution to the list, once the offline discussions are complete, thus avoiding the possibility of many people receiving lots of unwanted emails about a topic that is not relevant to them.
