Again Re: Compute syntax

Bob Schacht-3
I'm sending this message a second time to acknowledge ViAnn's help. My
first attempt was rejected because it was deemed "identical" to a previous
message. So I was advised to "please  alter the text of  the message in
some way and resend  it to the list. ...you should  ... add  a  sentence
or  two  at  the top  explaining  why you  are
resending the  message, so that the  other subscribers understand why  they are
getting two copies of the same message." I'm attempting to comply with this
directive.

Bingo. No, this time I had it set up as numeric.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

"Duplicate" postings to SPSSX-L (was, re: Compute syntax)

Actually, your first attempt wasn't rejected; it went out just fine.

Those "rejected duplicate posting" messages happen from time to time,
referring to a posting you made that was distributed correctly.

They appear to result from certain kinds of mail bounce, that send
the bounce message, with the original message text, back to the
*list*, but appearing to come from you. It's a good thing the
LISTSERV software does recognize and reject them; otherwise, at best
your posting would be duplicated, and at worst there'd be a cascade
of new bounce messages posted to the list.

Make sure your original posting was distributed; that will almost
always be the case. (Yours was, Bob.) If it was, ignore and discard
the 'duplicate' message.
