Analysis query

Muir Houston
Hi Listers,
this is a query about how best to analyse data.

I have a dataset with school pupil information which includes
demographic details, psychometric test scores on a number of instruments
and high school test results.
N=1562

In addition, and this is what I am trying to analyse - I have for around
45 pupils whether or not they applied to one of four medical schools,
whether they were granted an interview, and finally whether they
received an offer of a place.

Now in order to even attempt to apply to medical school (over here it is
an undergraduate degree and highly competitive) they must have achieved
at least 5 'Highers' (the Higher is a national qualification by subject
for pupils in equivalent of K12 and has pass grades of 'A' 'B' and 'C' -
but only 'A' is usually acceptable for medical school)

Would it be plausible to draw a random sample which meets the selection
criteria of 5 'Higher' 'A' grade passes from the larger dataset and
compare this with the 45 who applied, in order to see if they differ on
the basis of for example scores on the various psychometric tests.

if so how many should I draw for the random sample to merge with the 45
who applied?

And would a logistic regression with either interview granted, or place
offered as the dependent variable seem a sensible way to proceed?

thanks in advance

Muir
