The point-biserial correlation is just a special case of the ordinary Pearson r. The reason textbooks show (or used to show) a different formula is that when one variable is a dichotomy, the usual formula could be simplified somewhat.

I am looking to find an application within SPSS 19 to find a Biserial
Correlation Coefficient. I have one variable that is a "rate" and one that
is a "binary (yes/no)" answer.
Does SPSS 19 have this within it?
Thanks.
