Breaking Python integration

Henry Crawford
(Jon Peck: posted more detailed version of this in devcentral python forum)

In a nutshell, three of my four installations of Spss 16.02 have had, and
lost, their python connectivity.  With the exception of one machine, running
XP on nearly identical hardware, three machines have had spss freeze during
a syntax run and, upon restarting spss, no longer been able to initiate
python code without getting:

>Error # 6887.  Command name: begin program
>External program failed during initialization.
>This command not executed.

(The above generated with a "hello world" routine).

Is this uncommon?  What could cause such behavior?
