Bug in repeated measures ANOVA SPSS 17?

Joost van Ginkel
Bug in repeated measures ANOVA SPSS 17?

I carried out a repeated measures ANOVA in SPSS 17. I didn't specify a measure name, and I got a warning message in the output that said that "The subcommand MEASURE is empty and will be ignored". SPSS performed the analysis but the titles of the plots all said: "Estimated Marginal Means of MEASURE_1". Since I wanted an appropriate variable name of the dependent variable in all the titles of my plots, I ran the analysis again, only now I specified a measure name too. But when I did that, SPSS added a second block of within subjects variables underneath the variables that I had already specified. Apparently, when you specify a variable name, SPSS 17 assumes that this dependent variable is added next to the default dependent variable MEASURE_1, thereby making it a MANOVA. Is this a bug in SPSS or am I missing something here?

Best regards,

Joost van Ginkel

Hi Joost.  I just tried the following with 17.0.2, and received no such warning.  In the tables and plot, the DV is called MEASURE_1, but IIRC, that has always been the case.

GET FILE='C:\Program Files\SPSSInc\Statistics17\Samples\English\1991 U.S. General Social Survey.sav'.

GLM educ paeduc maeduc
  /WSFACTOR=who 3 Simple(1)
  /METHOD=SSTYPE(3)
  /PLOT=PROFILE(who)
  /EMMEANS=TABLES(who)
  /CRITERIA=ALPHA(.05)
  /WSDESIGN=who.

Cheers,
Bruce

Strange, I've tried it again and the problem doesn't seem to occur
anymore. I guess I must have done something wrong. Anyway, thanks.
