I am new to Windows 7, but am the administrator, and have a licensed copy of SPSS on my new laptop, but when I "run as administrator" (right click) the patch (18.0.2 and now 18.0.3), I get the following -- "could not find any previously installed compliant products on the machine for installing this product". And the patch is not applied. I have downloaded the patches several times, made sure that SPSS 18 is not running when I try to apply the patch, I have re-installed SPSS 18 in case something went wrong the first time. SPSS 18.0 is working just fine -- just can't apply the patch! I just installed the 18.0.3 patch on my desktop computer (same serial number -- university license) under Windows XP and it worked fine, so I'm guessing it may be a Windows 7 problem, but I checked the archives and couldn't find anyone else with this problem. Help! Any suggestions? No suggestions, but I do have a question for someone at SPSS. Why is "Help - Check for updates" not alerting me to the existence of patch 18.0.3. I just clicked on Help - Check for updates, and got the following message: You are currently on release 18.0.2 of IBM SPSS Statistics You are on the latest patch for your current release. But of course, when I actually log in to the Tech Support site, and go to the patches page, I do find patch 18.0.3, with this description: Statistics 18.0.3 This patch is comprehensive and includes 18.0.1 and 18.0.2. It will upgrade your existing Statistics 18.0.0, 18.0.1, or 18.0.2 installation to Statistics 18.0.3. This is a regular maintenance release and contains fixes for many customer reported defects. Note: This patch also applies to the various Student versions of the product. Thanks.

p.s. - Does anyone else find it ironic that version 18 is still being patched after 19 has been released? :-O

Be sure you downloaded the correct version (32 bit/64 bit) and followed the specific instructions for Windows 7 machines.
I got a similar message when I tried the wrong version. I have now downloaded and applied patch 18.0.3. And now when I click on Help - Check for Updates, I get this: --- start of message --- Sorry, we are unable to verify the version of IBM SPSS Statistics that you are using. The latest release of IBM SPSS Statistics available for purchase is 18. For more information on the new features available in the upgrade go to http://www.spss.com/software/statistics/whats-new/. --- end of message --- If I click on Help - About, on the other hand, it tells me I'm running release 18.0.3.

[Two long messages for Bruce and Paulette]
Paulette, My experience has been that when 'installers' and 'updaters' fail to work it can sometimes be linked back to a faulty 'registry value' (not always). I do not recommend that you attempt to fix your own registry values, as the process is very delicate and can cause great harm to your PC if done incorrectly. Instead, if you have an IT team (which I am hoping you do!) ask them to uninstall all SPSS products and remove SPSS registry information. Even though you may uninstall SPSS there may be some 'residual' registry keys/values left on your computer that are confusing the patch/installer. With that recommendation said: I invite others who have had issues uninstalling SPSS and experience working with registry keys (and manually removing them) as each program is integrated differently and I would hate to have her remove SPSS from the registry and some ancillary program stop working that uses those keys - does anyone advise against having her IT do this? Maybe someone from IBM/SPSS can weigh-in?) HTH, \\ Bruce, My guess is that often these 'auto check software version' features communicate with a server that has the necessary information to confirm 'updatedness' (I'm a student, I can make up words!). While the SPSS programming team may have pushed a new patch out, for whatever reason, they have failed to correct/update the information on the 'update server'. Thus, the download is available, but the information on the update server is incorrect (they are not necessarily auto-linked - aka someone has to 'update it'! Irony?). (not sure if you assumed this already, or even wanted an answer from a non IBM-SPSS employee but I figured I would throw my assumptions in). p.s. - Does anyone else find it ironic that version 18 is still being I agree that if you have the resources and the need, updating to 19 makes patching 18 seem moot. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think 17, and maybe even 16, might still be 'supported' by IBM/SPSS. I think it would be very frustrating as a customer who is using an older version that they sold me a 'bugged' version, and even though they offer phone/email support, are doing nothing to fix the problem (i.e. not providing patches to the very expensive software I purchased). I, for one, am very glad they are updating previous versions of SPSS and not touting their new flag-ship as the end-all of all bugs/problems (and forcing me, or my University, to buy it!). A great example of software packages doing this would be Windows XP and Vista: I believe they are still pushing out weekly updates for XP/Vista, despite Windows 7 being the new '~shiny~' of OS's (granted an OS is a bit more 'critical/high priority' than say SPSS, but that can be argued as being relative). **I just confirmed with our IT team at our University that we have NOT updated to 18.0.3 (for whatever reason) but they are seeing the same messages regarding the update being current with 18.0.2 as you described. Could it be that 18.0.3 is still in 'testing' (odd to say especially since this is a patch...) but could this be a 'pre official release'? I am not even sure if SPSS does this. Just a thought. What I was finding ironic is that nowadays, version n+1 is released before all the problems in version n are sorted out. It seems to me that in days of yore, when new versions were not appearing annually, we'd have a more than negligible period of time in which to work with a fairly stable version that was relatively free of problems--I'm thinking back to versions 9, 11 and 11.5, for example. But don't mind me...I'm just having a curmudgeonly whinge. ;-)

Colleagues
This message is for the folks at IBM who look after
SPSS
Norton/Symantec has a tool called the Norton Removal
Tool which when run will completely remove a failed installation or a
damaged Norton product (app and registry entries). It fixed a long standing
Norton 360 problem with legacy live update apps etc that I had for almost 3
years. It seems to me that an equivalent would be helpful for those of us
with SPSS problems. Please consider
Warm regards/gary

We followed up with Paulette, and the problem
turned out to be what Melissa Ives had suggested. Paulette was apparently
given incorrect documentation for her new computer, and thought she was
running a 32 bit version of Windows 7 when she was actually running a 64
bit version. When she installed the correct version, everything went fine.
David Nichols IBM SPSS Support Knowledgebase Resolution 86586 Problem Summary: "Could not find any previously installed compliant product on the machine for installing this product" when installing Statistics product or patch Problem Description: You are installing either the Statistics program or a Statistics patch. During the installation process you are receiving the following message: "Could not find any previously installed compliant product on the machine for installing this product". The installation process then terminates and the program/patch is not installed. Resolution Summary: Resolution depends upon Statistics version. Resolution Description: ** STATISTICS 17 ** IF you are experiencing this behavior when installing IBM SPSS Statistics 17, THEN you must first uninstall the Statistics 17 Trial/Demo version. Once this has been done, you should be able to install the 'full' version of Statistics 17 normally. ** STATISTICS 18 ** IF you are experiencing this behavior when installing a Statistics 18 patch, THEN the cause is most likely due to a mis-match between the bit-version (i.e. 32-bit, 64-bit) of your Statistics program and that of the patch. Confirm whether you have Statistics 18 32-bit or 64-bit installed and download the patch with the corresponding bit-version.
