Casestovars question

FernandezLanier, Adriana (DCJS)

Good morning. I’m not very familiar with casestovars but I’m finding that it’s a useful tool. I’m trying to understand why it’s better to use the "_" separator rather than the default, "." .  I’m reviewing a former staff’s syntax (see below) and they specified that "_" had to be used rather than the default.  The ID is an arrest identifier that is unique to an individual. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Adriana

CASESTOVARS

 /ID = nysid

 /SEPARATOR = "_"

 /GROUPBY = variable

/COUNT = count "The Number of Failure Events" .

My guess is that the choice of "_" instead of "." (the default) has
nothing to do with the CASESTOVARS command itself, but with some syntax
be used later that works on the variables created by CASESTOVARS, and
expects the variables to have "_" in the middle of their names. Keep on
reviewing the syntax and try to find any code that references variables
with "_" inside their names.
