Hello,
This issue has come up, so I thought I should tell you about it.
First, there are a few Lists at UGA that have "public" archives. This is
not usually the case -- most archives are "private". Private archives are
accessable only to subscribers, and require a login (with listserv
password) to be viewed/searched.
"Public" archives have no such restriction, but that is not our default
when creating a list (though it may have been in 1987).
You may use Google (among search engines) to search Public archives. You
would need to use the Listserver's search engine on Private archives.
Until about Dec 23, 2015, both SAS-L and SPSSX-L had public archives.
The change in the archives of both SPSSX-L and SAS-L was made in response
to a massive series of searches that slowed the Listserver down. Whether
malicious or poorly-formed is not really the issue.
I have considered returning both to "public", but one problem with archive
searches performed by many search engines is that they have no "time
bound" on the search. Both SPSSX-L and SAS-L were created in 1987. Our
archives go back to 1997 (I believe Marist has archives that go back to
the creation, though I believe those are not public either). While some
responses to a search query might be timeless, most are more immediate.
That is the situation at present; and I regret I cannot say when or if it
will change.
