Changing the size of viewing window that displays the data in the active cell

Lauren
In SPSS there is a viewing window above the actual spreadsheet (in data view) that displays the data contained in the currently active cell. Is it possible to change the size of this viewing window so that it displays all the data without having to scroll through it (i.e. increasing the 'height')? In excel, for example, you can increase the size of the function bar so that all the text in the selected cell is displayed at once. I know you can change the display width of the variables/columns, but I have some very long string variables and I would like to be able to read all of the data in the cell easily without scrolling across the computer screen. I'm using SPSS v23.

Other than widening the whole Data Editor window, you can't get anymore DE display space.  On my screen, with the DE window the full width of the computer screen, I can see 180 characters.

Also, do you know about splitting the screen in the DE (Window >Split)?  That might help you organize the space better.  You can also get a wide listing by running a procedure like Analyze > Reports > Case Summaries to list the data in a pivot table, which can then be edited to change the width.  In the PT, the value will be wrapped to display the entire value.

Do you really need such long strings?  Can you shorten them?  Have you
considered converting them to numeric (? with AUTORECODE?) and using the
(much shorter) strings as value labels?

Thank you both for your responses.

The long strings are needed for qualitative purposes, but we do convert the strings to numeric data using various coding procedures. I was hoping there was a more user-friendly way to read long string data within the data file, but will use the case summaries procedure as this seems the next best option.

You are using your strings for qualitative analysis.  If you haven't already
come across it, there's a book by Lesley Andres (2012) which briefly
describes a marriage of SPSS and Atlas.ti for quantitative analysis of
qualitative data.  Links to author, book and my comments are on my page:
