Chi-square with custom data

Amanda22
I'm analyzing qualitative data that has been coded into "hits"- mentions for
a given topic. I am comparing two groups for how often respondents from each
group mentions said topic (in this case, factors influencing addiction
recovery, such as housing, family support, mental health, etc.). I need to
run individual chi-squares for each topic across the two groups. I'm having
trouble 1) entering the data into SPSS in a format that will be read
line-by-line, rather than lumping topics together and 2) running the
chi-square (How does SPSS know my total number of respondents when all I'm
showing is a subset, the number of hits for a topic?). My appreciation to
anyone who can help.

I have NO idea what this means.  Would you mind clarifying the issue?
Are the data already aggregated or do you have individual respondents
answers?
Are the data already entered?  How are they organized?

SORT CASES BY Topic.
SPLIT FILE BY Topic.
CROSSTABS.... etc.

It occurs to me that "number of hits for a topic" might mean that the data
are already aggregated.
You will want to look at the WEIGHT command.
