Combining data from 2 files

Tanya Dockendorf
I am new to SPSS, so hopefully this is an easy question for someone to
answer.  I have 2 files. One file contains the data for 13 studies with
multiple cases per study. One of the variables is the study number, so
of course multiple cases have the same study number.  The second file
contains variables that classify each study on a number of
characteristics, with just 1 case per study and the same study number
identifier as in the first file.  Is there a way to bring the study
classification information from the 2nd file into the 1st file without
having to duplicate cases in the "look-up" file to match the number of
cases in the data file?

Thanks in advance!

Tatiana

You need to name the second file as a table on the TABLE subcommand on the
MATCH FILES command. How you do this through the dialog box from Data>Merge
Files>Add Variables depends upon which version of SPSS you are running.
Search in the Help Index for keyed table.
