Dear Colleagues,
I have two separate categorical variables. The one asks if the respondent is a member of a union. The second is linked to the first, in that, if the respndent answered no then the respondent is asked if a member of the household is a member of a union. i would like to combine the results of these two variables to come up with one variable which counts whether a respondent or a member of the respondent's household is a member of the union. I am a novice user of SPSS and would appreciate assistance that does not assume an intimate familiarity with the program. Yours, Simon Kiss Simon J. If your values are both 0=No and 1=Yes,
Then you can: Compute anyunion=max.1(self_union,family_union). Value labels anyunion 0 'No' 1 'Yes'.
