Commas in Numeric Variable

janetB

My numeric variables are displaying in the data editor with commas. I don’t want them. Interestingly running a formats command doesn’t change it.  This started after a recent restart of my computer due to network problems. I got the initial set screens where I had to specify Locale, change default file locations etc.  I am running version 22.

Can anyone please help me make the commas go away?  They are unsightly and inappropriate in the context they are appearing in as well as creating an additional formatting burden when I’m copying and pasting to excel on the fly.

Thanks

Janet

PS. Bonus would be if someone could tell me where/how the user settings I had to reset are stored so I can make a backup in case this type of network created ‘restart’ occurs again.

If you are seeing these as digit group separators, e.g., 123,456,789, then you have "Apply locale's digit grouping format to numeric values" set.  You can turn this off in Edit > Options > General.  However, the commas are just for display and do not affect exporting to Excel.

If the problem is that  you are getting commas where there should be dots for the decimal symbol, your OS locale is probably set to use a comma decimal - which Excel also should not mind.  You can change the locale at the OS level or with SET LOCALE, or you can use SET DECIMAL  DOT.

Janet,

Have you tried:

set locale="en_US" .

You might first want to try:

show locale .

This will tell you what's going on. You might also want to check with your system admin to see what the local ID's are. It may be the server that's overriding SPSS.
