Copy variable and its value labels into new variable

Dear all,
 
I have to recode a number of variables and I prefer recode INTO (...) over just recode since I'd like to retain my original variables as well as the recoded ones. However, it's quite a lot of work to specify all value labels again for the new variables since usually only 1 or 2 labels change and the rest stays identical.
 
Is there a trick to copy a variable and its value labels into an exact copy with just a different variable name?
 
Any recommendations are highly appreciated!
