Please someone help me. I am going mad here.
I can not print graphs in my PASW 18.0 software and get a message saying: ""Could Not Start Java Virtual Machine. Chart will not be drawn." I have looked it up on the internet. Apparently it is a known problem and the solution is to install PASW 18.0.3 patch first and then 18.0.3.4 hotfix. They all say that these patches are at IBM suport portal. But I cannot find them there. Only updates for SPSS 19.0 and above are there. I am using a MAC. Thank you for your assistance. Abbas |

Good luck locating anything in that inexcusable mess.
I used to think the SPSS.com website was a disaster. Multiply that by a factor of 1000 at IBM. They seriously need to hire someone full time to fix that chaos. -----

David, you are not kidding. It is really ridiculous. It clearly shows my product to be PASW 18.0 but when I go to choose a patch, it offers updates for versions 19.0 and 20.0. Did you have the same problem? Do you have a solution?

"Do you have a solution?"
I might be mistaken here, but it appears that IBM doesn't keep things around for more than one release behind the most recent. Might see if you can find some pack rat who has it lying around somewhere and is willing to burn you a CD/DVD (probably way to large for an email). Me? I'm still using the good "old reliable" SPSS 11.5 . Does what I need! --

LOFL,
I found a link to the SPSS 18.0.2 patch on the Japanese SPSS site ;-) OTOH: I hope it doesn't turn all your menus and output into Kanji. I searched "PASW1802Mac.dmg" and found it after scrolling way down. -- http://www.spss.co.jp/support/tech_info/download/patch/spss/Statistics1802/Client/Mac/PASWStatistics_1802_Mac_Patch.dmg

All the 18.0.3 links I was able to locate were redirects to the IBM "support" portal.
If you find an external DL link post it for the benefit of other readers (I personally won't require it). --

I certainly will if and when I am successful. I found the .dmg file and downloaded it. But when I try to open it, I get a warning saying the disk image couldn't be open. Any idea why? I was so close...

Maybe corrupted file? Incomplete download?
How large in MB is the downloaded file?

You are right. The file was corrupted. I downloaded it again and was able to install it. Sadly though, it did not fix the problem. Many blogs say that after this patch, I must install PASW 18.0.3.4 Hotfix. May God help me trying to find that bugger.

Alright, I have solved my SPSS problem of failing to draw charts due to Java Virtual Machine. Here is the procedure you must follow to solve this issue:
1) Go to the SPSS web site in Japan (http://www.spss.co.jp/techsupport/tech-info/001204.html). It is all in Japanese but don't be frightened. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and choose the PASW 18.0.3 patch for Mac and save it on your hard drive. 2) Make sure PASW is not running. Open the patch and follow the installation. Open PASW and go to about PASW on the top menu and make sure that the version now is 18.0.3. This is very important. If the version is not 18.0.3. do not proceed. Most likely the patch was not installed properly. You must do this first. 3) Now you have to install PASW 18.0.3.4 hotfix. You can get it from: http://db.tt/sfRcf4z. When you click on this link, a file (libspssjvm.dylib) will be downloaded. 4) Again make sure that PASW is not running. 5) Using FINDER find PASWStatistics18.0.app icon and right click on it. The menu with an option 'Show Package Contents' will open. 6) Click on this option and a new menu opens. Open the folder <Content> and then <lib>. 7) Copy the downloaded hotfix file 'libspssjvm.dylib' to this <lib> folder. If it asks you to replace an existing file, accept. 8) Restart Statistics 18.0 and it should be working now. Many thanks to David for his help. Cheers, Abbas |
