Crosstabs includes Tables?

Allan Reese (Cefas)
I've just got some weird output from 17.0.1. Ran a recode and a
crosstabs just to check the recode had operated as wanted.  There are
only 750 cases.

autorecode definition / into usecategory / print.
recode usecategory (1,2,6=1)(4,8=2)(5=3)(3,7=4)(9=5) (else=9).
value labels usecategory(1)eggs (2)hatchery (3) ornamental (4) sport (5)
table (9) ?.
CROSSTABS TABLES= definition by usecategory.

The output file stuck with (processing..) visible but the table was
displayed as wide, nested layout.

I reran the CROSSTABS and got the expected 2-way table.  I don't have
the TABLES module but it looks like the output processor somehow invoked
it.

This experience seems to break the first law of computing: computers do
what you tell them!  Has anyone else seen "wrong output"?
