Data Entering for MDS/cluster analysis

Caroline Davis
I have collected data on a sorting task, and I'm trying to figure out how to enter it in SPSS.  I asked 51
participants to sort 15 cards into piles based on criteria they determined on their own (pile range: 2
to 7).  What I want to know is which excerpts tended to be clustered together, and I'd like to use SPSS
and possibly some measure of MDS.

Right now, the data are in the form of piles (in rows) and participants (in columns), and piles look
like this -- AEGH -- indicating that cards A, E, G, and H were grouped together.  One thing I'm not
sure about is how SPSS will handle the pile variability, since not everyone has the same number of
piles.

Any help would be much appreciated.

CD.
