Dataset error

E. Bernardo
Hi all,

I have a dataset with almost 5000 cases and 5000 variables. While I was working with the dataset for about three days using SPSS 16 I did not encounter any problem.   Just today, I deleted my version 16 and replaced with SPSS 17.0.  After I successfully installed the SPSS17, I opened the said dataset.  The dataset was then opened but with the following error message:

"An unknown error occured processing DataSetMsg: clas CIGetDataMsg"
                                                           "OK"

By clicking the "OK" several times, the error message would be disappeared but the dataset is still there active. I then tried to run the frequency procedure, the following appeared in the output editor:

Warnings

Command: FREQUENCIES

Input error when reading a case.

This command not executed.

Any changes made to the working file since 27-APR-2009 13:49:03 have been lost. The time now is 21:58:50.

Whatwent wrong with my dataset?

I need your help to recover my data because I have no backup copy.

Thanks.
Eins

Re: Dataset error

ViAnn Beadle

Did you delete 16 or uninstall it? After you installed 17, did you reboot? I think you need to talk to SPSS support.

Thank you, ViAnn.  I am sorry for the late reply.  I was out of town for the last three days without access to internet.

Yes, I unsinstall the ver16 before I installed the ver17.  I rebooted after the installation.  I did not work.  I also talked to our local SPSS support but its unfortunate.  The dataset was corrupted, they said.

I will just redo because I need to resume my work today.

ViAnn, thank you so much for your kind help..

Eins.

Re: Dataset error

Kylie

Hi Eins,

The same error is logged in the SPSS knowledgebase and they say that these corrupted files can usually be opened in an earlier version of SPSS. If that works, then they suggest saving the file as a SPSS portable file and then reopening it in your newer version and the problem should be fixed. If you have access to a computer with an earlier version of SPSS then hopefully this will work for you.

Cheers,

Kylie.

Thank you, Kylie.
I have tried already to open the data using versions 15 and 16 but the same message appeared.  I tried also to save as portable both in 16 and 17, but still unfortunate.  I will try it by saving as portable with ver15 in the office on Monday.

I also tried to convert the data to spss file. However, the resulting excel file was empty.
