apparently when you create a custom attribute via syntax it is hidden by default but can be turned on in View>Custom Attributes in the data editor.

Subject: Display custom VARIABLE ATTRIBUTES in Data Editor using Syntax?
If I use the Data->New Custom Attribute dialog box to create a custom
variable attribute, the dialog box shows a check box giving me the
option to "Display attribute in Data Editor". When using the VARIABLE
ATTRIBUTE syntax, the apparent default is to hide the custom attribute
from the data editor, and documentation for the VARIABLE ATTRIBUTE
command includes no mention of displaying the attribute in the data
editor. (Although SPSS Help states that "This dialog generates VARIABLE
ATTRIBUTE command syntax", I'm finding so such syntax appearing in the
Output window or syntax log when using the dialog box.)
Is it possible to create a custom attribute using syntax and have it
display in the data editor?
Thanks very much,
Dan R.
