Dear all,
My client needs the Python Essentials for SPSS Version 17. These are no longer availabe from SPSS since the acquisition by IBM. It is suggested, however, "to try and obtain them from another user" (see here). So there it goes. Could anybody please share the SPSS Python Essentials for version 17 with me (off-list if desired) ? Ruben,
Gotta love the backward/forward compatibility fiasco eh?. It would be nice if someone were to collect all those antiques and stash them on a website somewhere. Not sure if that would somehow violate IBM policies of one form or another. I don't understand the whole "unable to distribute prior to ver 18 business". Don't they want to keep their OLDER customers happy? How much disk resources and bandwidth could it possibly require? They bought the company, why not dedicate a few resources to maintain good faith among the obviously LONG term users --(I know, it's a "business thing". I couldn't possibly understand or fathom the nuances) -- . Oh well, I will now go away and gnash my teeth in silence.
Please reply to the list and not to my personal email.
Those desiring my consulting or training services please feel free to email me. --- "Nolite dare sanctum canibus neque mittatis margaritas vestras ante porcos ne forte conculcent eas pedibus suis." Cum es damnatorum possederunt porcos iens ut salire off sanguinum cliff in abyssum?" |

@David: yes, that puzzles me a bit too. The Plugin states that it's freeware so -if I understand correctly- even I'm allowed to distribute it. Users who really need it will probably get it anyway. In that case, not distributing the Plugin doesn't force users to upgrade to newer SPSS versions. So I don't see how all this can be beneficial to IBM but I'm confident I'm missing something obvious.
@Will: thanks a million for helping out! No luck so far though. Still stuck with the infamous and ubiquitous >Error # 6887. Command name: begin program >External program failed during initialization. >This command not executed. My client is on 17.0.0, he installed Python 2.5 and SPSSStatisticsPythonPlugInWin32_1700.exe. I think there must be some kind of mismatch between all those versions... The installation instructions mention "SPSS 17.0" but does that mean 17.0.0, 17.0.1, 17.0.2 or none of those? Same with "Python 2.5". There's a whole bunch of Python 2.5 releases. I Googled for an overview of which exact versions of SPSS, Python and the Plugin should be compatible but I still haven't found what I'm looking for. To be continued... |
I will be away from the office Thursday 4/25 and Friday 4/26, but will check email often.

Well, old versions of the Statistics software
are also no longer available - and never were prior to the IBM acquisition.
But the extra wrinkle here that affects the plugins is that things
released prior to the IBM acquisition did not, by definition, go through
the elaborate process IBM uses for validating all the legal, export control,
ownership proof etc requirements - the "blue washing" process.
SPSS had its own similar but less extensive processes, but they were,
of course, not vetted by IBM.
So IBM will not distribute the old plugins/Essentials (we tried) or allow IBM employees to do so. We did manage to make the V18 plugin materials, which predate the acquisition, available with some rework, repackaging, and license updating, but that's as far back as we could go. The license for the V17 plugins is reproduced below. It has lots of typical legal verbiage, but you can see that basically anyone can redistribute the package subject to the recipient agreeing to the same terms as the original ones, which typically happens at installation time. But don't ask me for legal advice on this. As for the specific plugin version for V17, there were 17.0.0, 17.0.1, and 17.0.2 versions. Back then these generally needed to be matched with the corresponding 17.0.0, 17.0.1, or 17.0.2 SPSS version. With current versions the matching process isn't so strict. Freeware License Agreement This Freeware License Agreement (this "Agreement") sets forth the terms and conditions pursuant to which SPSS Inc., a Delaware corporation ("SPSS"), is offering you (hereinafter, "you" or the "user") the right to use the Software Package (defined in Section 1). Dear Jon,
Thanks for this explanation. So the basic point is that by distributing older versions of the Plugin, IBM sort of suggests they are (partly) responsible for the quality of software produced by a different company (technically speaking). In order to really take this responsibility they must carefully check (and perhaps modify) this software. Since newer versions are available that do live up to IBM's standards, they prefer to allocate their resources to moving forward instead of backward. OK, that doesn't sound entirely unreasonable... ... but from the perspective of a client (without this background knowledge) things do seem kinda customer unfriendly. Kind regards, Ruben |

I guess I understand this a little better.
Maybe get some IBM lawyers to craft something, stating something to the effect of "This is what it was, now it is different... However, here it is but we take no responsibility for the sins of the past"...Don't call us or email us expecting teksport... you are on your own... UPGRADE? That might make everyone happy? ;-)

If IBM distributes something, IBM is liable
for any claim of infringement of someone else' intellectual property, of
any violation of export laws, etc. There is no warranty on the materials
in question, but the standard IBM processes are designed to ensure that
all these other issues have been carefully addressed. And compliance
with them is a lot of work. IBM can't simply disclaim responsibility
for any violations.
IBM maintenance policies for software it ships under warranty are much more user friendly than the old SPSS T&C. For example, maintenance is available for a much longer period than it was for SPSS, and customers on maintenance are entitled to hot fixes for serious problems to a much greater degree than previously. I don't see a way for us to do anything about material earlier than V18, which is already pretty elderly, but I don't see any reason why IBM would stand in the way of someone else hosting these older materials if they so desired. BTW, the I/O modules used for reading and writing SPSS sav files are an example where the IBM terms and conditions improve on the old SPSS ones. We heard from time to time that the license agreement for these under SPSS caused some users to avoid them. I personally spent a lot of time with the IBM lawyers to make sure that the T&C for these in the IBM world did not pose any such obstacles. I see many more instances now of these libraries being used by third parties. Whether this is due to the T&C changes, I can't say, but usage certainly has increased, which is to everyone's benefit. Again, none of this is legal advice.
