Draft guides to pop-out menus: Survey Analysis Workshop (SPSS)

John F Hall
SPSS stopped working suddenly on Monday and it has taken until today to renew my licence.  I used the down-time to work on a couple of draft guides to the contents of the Survey Analysis Workshop section of my website.

Catalogue of SPSS tutorials http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/uploads/2/9/9/8/2998485/catalogue_of_spss_tutorials.xlsx
is an Excel file listing all the SPSS tutorials and exercises: all the titles are hyperlinks to the relevant documents.

Pop-out menu guide
http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/uploads/2/9/9/8/2998485/pop-out_menu_guide.pdf  is an attempt to explain the sequence of pop-out menus.  I should be grateful if anyone (or your students) has the time to have a quick look and check them for clarity and ease of understanding.

All comments and suggestions gratefully received.

If you license is expiring, Statistics prints a warning message for a full month before the expiration.  It does not suddenly stop working.

Jon

There were no such messages.  The licence for 19 wasn’t due to expire until 2032, but Monica Young says it should have expired in April 2012.  In fact I carried on working for another full year before it just stopped.  Altogether I lost 4 days’ work on my SPSS tutorials, before Monica sorted out an order for 21.

I tried downloading 21 twice yesterday (once overnight) and twice it failed, apparently because France Télécom (aka Orange.fr) download speed was 14.5 kb/sec and the download was reporting well over 4 hours remaining.  Well this is rural France and I only have copper wire connection.  At 06:30 today I finally managed to download 21 (250 kb/sec) and install it by 08:02.  When I entered the authorisation code I discovered that I now have both 19 and 21.  Ain’t life grand?

Navigating the IBM site was horrendous: my SPSS start page (see below) is an understatement.  Why on earth can’t they have a simple one-click automatic licence renewal.

Monica, you’re wonderful.  I couldn’t have done it without your prompt action.
