Extraneous variables regression

Dear list,

  I want to carry out a stepwise regression analysis to see which factors  influence a linguistic phenomenon. However, there are some extraneous  variables that play a role, which I don't want to end up in the  proposed regression models, but that act as covariates, like in  UNIANOVA. Is this possible for regression? Otherwise I don't know how  to report this in my paper, because I want to show the proposed models,  but not those that contain extraneous variables..
