VECTORS, LOOPS AND OTHER DATA MANIPULATION TOOLS IN SPSS (HALF-DAY) WORKSHOP THURSDAY 14TH OCTOBER 2010 9-45PM TO 12-45PM ALCUIN RESEARCH RESOURCE CENTRE UNIVERSITY OF YORK, YORK STATISTICAL MODELLING IN R (HALF-DAY) WORKSHOP THURSDAY 14TH OCTOBER 2010 2PM TO 4-30PM ALCUIN RESEARCH RESOURCE CENTRE UNIVERSITY OF YORK, YORK 24TH ANNUAL USERS' MEETING FRIDAY 15TH OCTOBER 2010 ALCUIN RESEARCH RESOURCE CENTRE AUDITORIUM UNIVERSITY OF YORK, YORK ASSESS is an independent user group for SPSS, a computer package for analysing and presenting data. It is run by users, for users and is completely independent of manufacturers of the software. Between 1996 and 2009 ASSESS have given workshops on aspects of SPSS including syntax, macros, output management system (OMS) and Python. Two half-day workshops are provisionally planned to be held in the Alcuin Research Resource Centre, University of York, on Thursday 14th October 2010. The workshops are open to users of SPSS who are familiar with the menu toolbar but have limited knowledge of syntax. Workshop topics are at http://spssusers.co.uk/Events/2010/index.html Both workshops will be taught in an interactive hands-on workshop-style format, with frequent examples and exercises for participants to work through. A full set of notes and example files will also be given to all who attend. Andrew Fenyo is the senior computing officer at the University of Kent in Canterbury, UK and has considerable experience in providing support to staff and students using SPSS. He is currently the treasurer of ASSESS. Professor MacKenzie FIS, MSc, DIC, PhD, C.Stat, C. Sci., MFPHM (Hon.) is Director of the Centre of Biostatistics at the University of Limerick and is currently visiting Professor of Statistics in ENSAI France. ‘Vectors, Loops and other data manipulation tools in SPSS’ looks at building up programming skills in SPSS to help get the most out of your data. Participants are welcome to bring along SPSS-related queries to this workshop relating to their own data which the tutor will be willing (or at least attempt!) to answer. The ‘Statistical modelling in R’ workshop picks up the R trail by reviewing some general concepts of R and some elements of last year's introductory R course. Ideas will be illustrated via the use of the Linear Model function (LM) which was introduced in last year’s workshop and the Linear Mixed Effects function (LME) which was not. LME allows us to fit a wide variety of Linear Mixed Models which are required, inter alia, for the analysis of longitudinal data where the responses are repeated measures on the same subject or object. We also turn to generalisations of these models ie to GLMs, GLMMs, Survival and Frailty modelling. The ‘Vectors, Loops and other data manipulation tools’ in SPSS workshop will last from 9-45am to 12-45pm and the ‘Statistical Modelling in R’ workshop from 2pm to 4-30pm. The booking fee includes a coffee break mid-workshop but not overnight accommodation. A buffet lunch is also provided. Further details will be sent out to delegates upon receipt of booking forms. Delegates can choose to attend either or both workshops as well as the annual users meeting the following day. On the day following the workshops there will be the annual meeting of the SPSS users group (ASSESS). Come along to: * hear SPSS users talk about applications, the problems and solutions * hear the latest news from SPSS UK staff about product developments, and put your questions to them * see "live" demonstrations of SPSS software * question a panel of experts about particular problems * exchange ideas with other SPSS users * plan for an even better user group. The venue for both the workshops and users' meeting is the Alcuin Research Resource Centre (ARRC) on York University campus located in Heslington, 2 miles to the south-east of the city centre. It takes 10-15 minutes in a taxi from the railway station. The Number 4 bus runs regularly to the University from York railway station (see http://www.yorkshiretravel.net/). Parking at the University is very difficult. Location details are at http://www.york.ac.uk/np/maps/. Accommodation is bookable via tourist information on (01904) 621756 or (01904) 554455. THE PROVISIONAL PROGRAMME** * Welcome and introduction to meeting * SPSS company and product news; SPSS software demonstrations * Using Clementine to gain advantage from information by Elaine Fletcher, LogicaCMG * Strokes and the ‘Friday afternoon problem’: An audit using logistic regression by Mario Hair, University of the West of Scotland * SPSS and Statistics - the Lifeblood of Product Quality by Kevin Delaney, LifeScan Scotland * Using SPSS syntax to calculate time variables for cases within datasets by Jacqueline Collier, University of East Anglia * The assessment of quality of life in a clinical trial:- witchcraft with AMOS by Rhiannon Whitaker, University of Bangor (PLEASE NOTE THIS REPLACES THE SURVIVAL ANALYSIS PRESENTATION - APOLOGIES FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE CAUSED) * Developing Faculty wide teaching of statistics and SPSS using web-based interactive resources by Volker Patent, Open University * Annual General Meeting of ASSESS.
