I would consider neither Excel nor Access to be one the "statistical
packages". The Data Analysis pack that comes with Excel is trash. The native
statistical distributions functions built in Excel are quite inaccurate. If
you are willing to replace then by Ian Smiths' VBA functions then you can
try to use Excel for very simple tasks (and you should not even trust the
STDDEV function, BTW). Excel is cheaper than SPSS, agreed, but Excel is not
an statistical package, while SPSS is not a spreadsheet.
