Dear All A student in my intro to quantitative research methods class is running version 18 on her laptop (running Vista) and is getting a problem with output files. As you can see from her email below the College IT section appear to be at a loss. I actually still run version 13 for my own work as it’s stable on our network so I’ve no idea either. Any thoughts as to what might be happening? Regards David From: Fiona Hogan [mailto:[hidden email]] Hi David, Just a quick thing. I was onto the IT dept in Pat's about this, and unfortunately they couldn't help me and said to contact you. Every time I open my SPSS work at home...it asks me if I want to save. If I do, I have to save it as something new (as also happens with my outputs), and if I don't, it wipes my data, and I have to look in "recent files" to find it. The save icon, along with the undo, redo, show all variables and spell check icons are shaded out on my toolbar. They are shaded when I click on "file" too. It's possible I have somehow clicked them "off". If you know anything about this, please drop me an e-mail. Thanks a million, Fiona |
This sounds very much like what happens when SPSS opens with only the “front end.” I’ve had this problem with different versions of SPSS over the years. The “front end” windows display of SPSS is opening without the “back end” that contains the actual SPSS engine. This has happened to me for two reasons, I click on an SPSS file to start the program instead of starting SPSS and then opening the file from within SPSS, or I’m working with a file that is living on a network drive. My advice, always start SPSS before you open a file, don’t just click on SPSS filenames to start SPSS, and save files locally, don’t run off of network drives.
