Upon investigation by Tech Support and Development it turns out that the scripting run time error reported here is actually due to failure of one of the scripting components from registering correctly. This component registration issue has been corrected in the SPSS 16.0.2 patch as well as in the forthcoming SPSS Statistics 17.0 product.
The resolution below is in the process of being updated.

Subject: spss 16 scripts run-time error (when SPSS has been installed via silent install)
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has installed SPSS via a silent install (for multiple installations in labs) and managed to solve the SPSS scripts problem described at:
http://support.spss.com/Tech/default.asp
Knowledgebase search and Resolution Number 77952
which is described below:
Problem Subject: Runtime error when running macro
Problem Description: When I install SPSS using the /qb or /qn switch, I get the following error when running a macro
Run-time error '-2147010895 (800736b1)'
Automation error. This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
I am trying to get the SPSS workaround described below working:
This was caused by the "SETALLUSERSPROFILE2K" custom action within the SPSS 16.01 MSI only being present in the "UI" sequence. If you have an MSI editor you should be able to set this action to execute during a silent install as well.
If anyone has actually managed to get the above workaround to work, let me know.
