Factor Analysis Question: Rotation Sums of Squared Loadings.

James MacKillop

In running factor analyses in SPSS, I have noticed that there are no values for % of variance and cumulative % of variance for Rotation Sums of Squared Loadings when using an oblique rotation (such as promax or direct oblimin). The total, %, and cumulative % are there for initial and extraction, but only total for rotation. In contrast, when using orthogonal varimax rotation, total, %, and cumulative are present for the initial, extraction, and rotation solutions.

Is this because there are variable proportions of variance when using an oblique rotation but only one for an orthogonal one?

Also, under these circumstances, presumably the total amount of variance is the same as the extraction SSLs, but does this mean that no percentages can be reported for the individual factors?

Any addition clarification about this would be great. Thanks,
