Failed import of Excel data into SPSS 17.0.1

Thomas Mark-3

Dear all,

When trying to import data from an Excel 2002 spreadsheet, I get the following message:

Error accessing the Excel file. If the file is open in another application, please close it and retry.

This occurs when the Excel file is not open. I note on the SPSS website that there was a similar problem with the German version of SPSS, but I have downloaded the patch 17.0.1, and the problem persists. Has anyone encountered this problem?

Many thanks,

Mark Thomas

SPSS Support

Hello Mark,

Which machine and operating system were you running? Was the file on a server or on your computer? Have you tried opening it with ODBC, i.e. from File->Open Database?
