I have a file with the the US states, names, population,
electoral votes, congressional seats, FIPS code, and Post Office
codes.
Others might find useful in looking at state level data. E.g., for
following the upcoming election.
50 States, DC and PR.
I added flag variables for
States directly affected by Hurricane Sandy and
States .
I am also attaching a syntax file that will shows one application of
this base data.
This is something that could be used as a class demo of a potential
problem in viewing maps.
Surprise! SPSS does not key to the polygon files for the base map
by FIPS codes like it used to. The key is by string state names.
The tables show that about half the number of states, and about half
the US pop are affected by the hurricane.
Looking at the map could give a very different impression of the
potential impact on people and property.
If people were evenly distributed across the states, it looks like
1/4 to 1/3 would be impacted.
The files would be available from nabble. (I hope. This is the
first time I have tried posting through nabble and attaching files.)
