When was MULT RESPONSE first implemented in SPSS? Was it in 1989 as per the FM? © Copyright IBM Corporation 1989, 2016 John F Hall MA (Cantab) Dip Ed (Dunelm) [Retired academic survey researcher] Email: [hidden email] Website: Journeys in Survey Research Course: Survey Analysis Workshop (SPSS) Research: Subjective Social Indicators (Quality of Life) |
Probably not 1989 but the exact date might depend upon whether MR was available as a procedure in beta test form (i.e., available outside of SPSS beforeHohlen M: SPSS Procedure MULT RESPONSE: Frequency and Crosstabulation Tables for Multiple Response Variables. My old SPSS Update 7-9 manual says that MULT RESPONSE was added in Release 7 or 8 of SPSS. The version 9 manual came out in 1981. I am speculating a bit, but my impression is that Tex Hull authored the program. He is the co-founder often listed as C. Hadlai Hull on the various SPSS manuals. At a later point, multiple response functionality was also implemented in the Tables module. Anthony J. Babinec Co-Author, Data Analysis with IBM SPSS Statistics. 2017:Packt. Harry V. Thanks guys. I needed to know because I've been writing an account of the restoration of the SPSS files for a 1973 survey and wasn't quite sure. I can now confidently write that my then IT wizard, Jim Ring, wrote something in Fortran to produce multiple response tables long before they were available via SPSS. I vaguely remember it was actually one of the requests made by the SSRC Survey Unit at the international conference I organised in April 1974 at the London School of Economics and Political Science Social Science Data and the new SPSS. Details of the survey referred to are on my page: http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/trinians-survey.html If anyone would like to see a draft of the paper, let me know. Attitudes and Opinions of Senior Girls: an exercise in SPSS and survey forensics Abstract This paper is based on the detailed log kept by the author during restoration in 2004 of the original SPSS saved file for a 1973 survey of girls in senior forms at St Paul's Girls' School. It describes the coding of the raw data from the completed questionnaires and gives a step-by-step account of the retrieval and restoration of the original 1973 SPSS setup files used to capture (from 80-column punched cards) process and analyse the data and the updating and conversion of their syntax for use with SPSS for Windows. A new version of the saved file (compatible with SPSS for Windows) was uploaded by UKDA in 2012, but the variable names and labels remain in UPPER CASE, no missing values are declared and the measurement levels of all variables except two are set as Nominal. A new version has been prepared with modified variable names, variable and value labels changed to Mixed Case, measurement levels and missing values correctly specified and a selection of scores derived from attitude scales.
