Format for extracting variable and value labels from Excel files?

Robert L

It happens every now and then that users come to me with Excel files with data which they want to import into SPSS. So far, this has usually meant that someone (often myself) has to spend time to add and/or edit variable and value labels and other data attributes.

Is there any simpler way to do this? Given that this kind of variable information would be set up in one of the worksheets in an Excel file, is there any way to conveniently import this information about variables into SPSS? Copy and paste into the syntax window certainly seems possible, but there might be neater ways. Suggestions anyone? Anyone who has set up instructions to users as to what they should record and the format for this kind of information? Examples and suggestions would be most welcome.
