I am familiar with Art's solution, but with that you can not change the default width. As soon as I restart SPSS the column width is back to default. There is no way to make a permanent change
in the width of the Data Editor Variable View columns. You can use
View>Customize Variable View
to remove or reorder columns persistently or add custom attribute columns, but that does not include the column widths. That would be a nice enhancement.
