I recall coming across a post a while back where it was suggested that GENLINMIXED could not handle multilevel data. I was too busy to respond at the time and I cannot find the post.  

GENLINMIXED (a generalized linear mixed modeling procedure) can certainly handle multilevel data that arise from various exponential distributions.
