GLM repeated multivariate or within subject

Please can anyone tell me what are criteria for using multivariate F rather than within subject F

I know some experts [now including me] prefer within subject but would like to know detailed rationale

The most common reason to use MANOVA rather than conventional repeated
measures ANOVA, I think, is that the former does not require sphericity.
But the cost can be lower power in some circumstances.  See the MANOVA
section in Thom Baguley's nice note on sphericity:

ultilevel modeling of repeated measures data is another approach that is
arguable preferable to either classical RM ANOVA or MANOVA.
