Please can anyone tell me what are criteria for using multivariate F rather than within subject F
I know some experts [now including me] prefer within subject but would like to know detailed rationale
Best

The most common reason to use MANOVA rather than conventional repeated
measures ANOVA, I think, is that the former does not require sphericity. But the cost can be lower power in some circumstances. See the MANOVA section in Thom Baguley's nice note on sphericity: http://homepages.gold.ac.uk/aphome/spheric.html ultilevel modeling of repeated measures data is another approach that is arguable preferable to either classical RM ANOVA or MANOVA. http://jakewestfall.org/misc/Quene2004.pdf HTH.
