Generating numbered list

Novice Question: I am trying to add a variable that simply numbers each record sequentially so that I can replace ID numbers with less identifiable numbers e.g. 1 through 200.  I have tried non-random number generator commands and can’t seem to find syntax or topic in index for SPSS.  I am stumped.

Hi Heather:
if X is the sequential variable you want to compute try:

COMPUTE X = $casenum.
