Google chrome allows opening of SPSS files direct from website

John F Hall

Quite by accident, whilst updating my website via Weebly and simultaneously checking links via both Google and Google Chrome, I noticed in Chrome a large arrow descending to bottom left of the screen and leaving box(es) containing the name(s) of downloaded file(s) including SPSS *.sav files.  Clicking on one of these this opened the SPSS file, even when SPSS was not currently open.  I checked and double-checked (closing and reopening everything, including Google and Google Chrome) to make sure I wasn’t dreaming, but it works!

This means that (in Chrome only) users can now download and open SPSS files in one step, without having to copy and save them.  This is wonderful for me as I don’t now have to explain the steps need to access my files (and for users who no longer need to fiddle about to open them).

Now how do I get rid of the irritating Google ads?

There is nothing really new about this behaviour in Google Chrome (compared to other browsers). It only works in a better way (I think).

Chrome saves your data on your computer, but you don't really see it. If you take a look in Chrome Options you can see the download location under 'Advanced options' (or something like that, I use the Dutch language). I changed my download location and want Chrome to ask me where to store my downloaded files. So, on my computer it works differently.

If you take a look on this download location, you can see your where your spss-files are stored. You can see this also when you click on the arrow in the box and choose for one of the options.

It was new to me as I’ve only just started using Chrome, and it was a (nice) surprise.  The good thing is the ability to open SPSS files immediately even if SPSS (currently 19) isn’t already open.  With standard Google there’s the warning message first asking whether the user wants to open or save the file.  It still doesn’t solve the problem of using GET FILE to access files on other remote servers, which doesn’t work without some complex programming, but I can rewrite some of my tutorials to get round this.  I know about the downloads as the folder filled up with unwanted stuff that I already have on my hard drive.

Most of my tutorials were written and uploaded in Word *.doc format for SPSS 11, 15 and 18 on an old computer with Windows XP: they suffer the same delay when clicking on links, but I now have a new computer with Windows 7 and Word 2007 which can save fully functioning pdf files so I am slowly converting everything to pdf as the files display almost immediately.

It takes a while as I’m a retired academic now in my 8th decade, and working on my own with no institutional affiliation and a large garden to maintain as well as catching up on a backlog of recorded films.

If you haven’t already looked at my site, you should.  There’s some really interesting stuff on there, some not easily available elsewhere, if at all.

>>>Note that the extension command SPSSINC GETURI DATA can retrieve data directly from the Internet and open it in Statistics.  Here is the headline description.

This package provides an extension command with dialog box that can open sav, Excel, SAS, or Stata data files from an Internet address.

It requires the user to install the Python Essentials and the command from the SPSS Community site
(www.ibm.com/developerworks/spssdevcentral) in the Utilities collection, but it doesn't require any programming.

My tutorials are aimed at senior undergraduates, postgrads and newbies using the base system or gradpack.  They can worry about add-ons later.
