HLM with SPSS .sav data set

David Greenberg
I am trying to use an SPSS version 15 data set in version 6.02 of HLM to conduct a two-level analysis. I have no trouble choosing variables for the level-1 and level-2 files, and I specify "measures within persons" for the type of nesting. Following the instructions I enter a name for the MDM file, and save the mdmt file. There are no missing data. When I check stats, everything looks fine. However, when I press the Make MDM button, I receive a message saying "invalid dictionary subtape in SPSS levele-file. Filename is an empty file." All my variables are specified in SPSS as numeric, except for the ID which is a string variable (categorical). I have no difficulty running the HSB chapter 2 example, which employs similar coding. Might anyone be able to tell me what is wrong and what I should do about it?

You may want to try your question on the multilevel list, here:

html. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Re: HLM with SPSS .sav data set

Thanks for pointing out that the link is broken. I got it from the HLM 6
website (where it does work), so I don't know what the problem is. Try
this link instead: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/multilevel.html. If
this link doesn't work, google "hlm listserv" and select the second link
that comes up. Sorry about the error.

In reply to this post by David Greenberg
Hi David -

Just some speculation - maybe there is some compatibility issues with SPSS15
and HLM6.02.  There is an updated version of HLM - version 6.06.  I would
update that first and try again.

Also, there is a Multilevel Listserv that may be helpful in solving this
problem.

I am running SPSS11.5, but if you can't figure this out, you can send me the
file and I can try it out (if I am able to run v15 files on v11.5 - which I
am not sure of?).

HLM with SPSS .sav data set

In reply to this post by David Greenberg
I answered this last Friday, but for some reason my cc to the listserv
bounced. Here's what I said:

Hi David,

This is a recognized bug in v6. You can download a patch that fixes it, or
you can get around the problem by saving your SPSS file in some other format
& having HLM read the other file. Good luck.

    Best,
         Lisa

SPSS 17.0 deleting columns

Roberts, Michael
Hi all,

In previous versions I was able to delete a column of data by clicking
on the variablename in data view or variable view.  In ver. 17.0, I can
do this intermittently.  I noticed that if I did have a problem deleting
a column, I would be able to do this after shutting down and restarting
the program.

Has anyone else experienced this issue, and if so how can I fix it?

TIA

Mike

Re: SPSS 17.0 deleting columns

mpirritano
I have found, since 16, that occasionally I cannot delete a column, or
if in variable view a variable, just by hitting the delete key. However,
if the delete key is not working then right clicking and selecting
'clear' always works. This is also the case in 17.

Or use syntax. I know, it's not a fix, but it's so easy to remove variables
with the DELETE VARIABLES command.

Thank you for the tips.  I find that while scanning some data files I often simply delete a column to make my work quicker.  How would I go about setting the "cache now" setting?  I might add that this is after I have imported the data and the deletion is usually temporary.

Re: SPSS 17.0 deleting columns

SPSS Support
Hello Mike,
This note is just to let you know that SPSS is working on this problem. We have only been able to reproduce the problem sporadically and some of us have not been able to reproduce it at all. This makes it difficult to suggest a time when a fix will be available.  Until then, using the right-click->Clear process or the cache option suggested by George are recommended. (As Matt suggested in another post, right-clicking the columns in Data View (or the rows in the Variable View) and then choosing Clear from the pop-up menu is another way to delete the variables.)

Thank you for the tips.  I find that while scanning some data files I often
simply delete a column to make my work quicker.  How would I go about setting
the "cache now" setting?  I might add that this is after I have
imported the data and the deletion is usually temporary.

        TIA

I have had similar problems in older versions when using the data view editor.

Setting Cache Now first always resolves it.

        Good luck

        TIA

        Mike

Re: SPSS 17.0 deleting columns

mpirritano
When you can't delete a column with the delete key you can then delete
is using right-click and select clear. This is intermittent, but one or
the other always works. It was the same with 16. It also holds for
deleting variables from variable view.

Hello Mike,
This note is just to let you know that SPSS is working on this problem.
We have only been able to reproduce the problem sporadically and some of
us have not been able to reproduce it at all. This makes it difficult to
suggest a time when a fix will be available.  Until then, using the
right-click->Clear process or the cache option suggested by George are
recommended. (As Matt suggested in another post, right-clicking the
columns in Data View (or the rows in the Variable View) and then
choosing Clear from the pop-up menu is another way to delete the
variables.)

George,

Thank you, and all of you who responded, again.  I will use this in
future until (hopeful) a fix is developed.

Mike

As soon as you open a file:

File>
  Cache Data>
     Cache Now

Let me know if it helps.
