Help: SPSS version 15 and Vista Problems

FORCHEH, N. (DR.)
Dear list members,

A friend has reported problems installing and using SPSS v15 on Windows
Vista. I advised them to run the SPSS15VistaHotfix.exe after
installation. This has been done, but a day after re-installation and
running the hotfix as advised on SPSS website, it runs successfully even
after restating the computer. However, come the next day, the same
problem returns.

We leave in different parts of the world, so I cannot see exactly what
is going run. Is there any other known compatibility problems between
SPSS 15 and Windows Vista and hotfixes that are different from
SPSS15VistaHotfix.exe. Someone has suggested that he buys windows XP and
reformat the hard disk which I find to be extreme!

Thanks for the anticipated response.

I used v15 on XP and currently use V16 on Vista and have not had any
problems.

One thing your friend can try as a last resort is to "rollback" SPSS 15 to
be compatible to an earlier version of Windows.  This is possible in Windows
Vista and even XP.

To change the settings:

1.  Go to START, ALL PROGRAMS.
2.  Locate the SPSSInc folder, then SPSS 15.0 folder, then the SPSS 15.0
program icon.
3.  Place your cursor on the SPSS program icon and right-click your mouse
which will cause a menu to pop-up.
4.  On the menu, place your cursor to select "Properties".  This will
display the SPSS 15.0 properties box which has 5 tabs.  Click the
"Compatibility" tab.
5.  On the Compatibility tab, click the "Run this program in compatibility
mode".  Then click on the pull-down tab to select Windows XP (Service Pack
2) or if you prefer, another version of Windows.
6.  Then click OK to close the properties box.
7.  Restart the computer.

If your friend has put a shortcut icon on the desktop then just follow
instructions from step #3.

If this doesn't work, reformatting the hard drive and installing Windows XP
is a possibility but will be quite a headache as you'll also need to locate
and install compatible drivers.

Good luck to you both.

Lynn
