Help! error opening files

Nomi-2
Hello all,
My SPSS (16) won't open most data files and keeps giving me an error
message: "Text value unmappable in the current server locale". Has anyone
ever encountered this? Any idea what could be the cause or what I can do
about it (I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but the problem persists)?
Thanks,
Nomi

Re: Help! error opening files

SPSS Support
Hello Nomi,
I have pasted a resolution below my signature that addresses the problem for SPSS 16 on Mac. The issue there involved file names with local language characters.
Which type of computer and operating system are you using?
Which exact version of SPSS 16 are you running, i.e., 16.0, 16.0.1, 16.0.2? You should see this in the Help->About dialog.
Which language version of SPSS are you running?
Do the files that returned the error have special characters or spaces in the file names or paths?

Problem Subject:  "Text value unmappable in the current server locale" error message in SPSS 16 for Mac

Problem Description:  I have installed SPSS v. 16.0 for the Macintosh and while some of my .sav files open without a problem, some do not. When I try to open a problematic file I see:

"Text value unmappable in the current server locale"

Does the language locale have anything to do with the error message?

Resolution Subject: This problem has been reported to SPSS Development - Workaround Available

Resolution Description:
This problem has been reported to SPSS Development. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. Please see the workaround described below.

Downloading the patch 16.0.2 might solve the issue.
Otherwise, as a workaround, please ensure there are no special characters like é or spaces in the path or filename.
We apologize for the inconvenience.
